Exercise Adds “Spark” to Learning

An important book, Spark by John Ratey, MD has been “required” reading for many administrators, teachers and therapists for children with special needs around the country. Not a new book, it chronicles the measurable effect of physical education classes on TIMSS scores in Naperville, IL.

Why do we care? As education professionals, we need to be sure that our special needs children are getting enough exercise to stimulate their thinking processes. Better thinking means faster progress toward meeting IEP goals.

As teachers and therapists, we can’t mandate recess and exercise in the school day, but we can incorporate moderate exercise into our classrooms with flexible seating.  A June 2016 post on the award-winning blog “Extra Special Teaching” explains how to provide movement in the classroom.

If you have some creative ideas for incorporating controlled movement into the classroom, please contact us … or write a blog and send us the link!
