Strengthening the Connection Between Home and School

Newspapers, social media and education journals are voicing concerns about the value of homework in September’s “back-to-school” coverage. When a few teachers sent notices to parents that they would not be assigning homework, but instead recommended that families spend time together, the teachers were either lauded or vilified.

Dr. John Rosemond, family psychologist, wrote in a recent column (scroll to find "Parents Help with Homework...") that the value of homework as reinforcement is often outweighed by the parents’ enabling the child to avoid responsibility.  He contends that schools should assign a moderate amount of homework and stop encouraging parents to help with it.
As an education tool for special needs kids, SmartEdApp 4.0* provides the opportunity for specialists and parents to work together to provide that extra boost of reinforcement. Teachers select specific activities for the child to use on his tablet or computer at school and at home; when the child opens SmartEdApp he/she sees a variety of activities – ALL of which support his unique IEP goals. And since progress is automatically recorded, his teacher sees what he has accomplished on his own time.

What’s the parents’ role? Interact with the child - celebrate the success, but encourage another try when the student has more work to do. Avoid giving hints; praise good results!

*No need to worry about compatible devices; SmartEdApp 4.0 works on both iOS and Android.

My son John was diagnosed with ASD at 3 years old. I was a single mother, disabled myself, raising him. He was nonverbal until about 5 years old; with constant work at school and with me at home, he's now considered a high functioning ASD.
