ISTE 2016 Offers Insights Into
Special Needs Education

The International Society for Technology in Education (#ISTE2016) is meeting in Denver June 26-29. Several sessions address the education of special needs students.

  • Collaboration Across the Globe with Special Needs Students
  • Producing an Inclusive Learning Environment
  • How to Move Your Library Beyond “Accommodation” Assistive/Adaptive Technologies
  • Achieving Accessibility: Tips and Strategies to Design Content for All Learners
  • Erasing the Line: A Perspective on What’s Broken with the SAMR Model

Kathy Burdick, Director of Content from SmartEdTech, discovered a great peripheral for teaching students with special needs at ISTE. "Imagine a student's engagement in learning with a furry friend that lip syncs every word that is said by an app!"

With SmartEdTech, for example, the teacher opens an activity and records a child saying the vocabulary words. Turn on the Bluebee pal and it will repeat the child's recording. "The self-monitoring alone will empower the child!" adds Burdick.

Can’t attend in person? Many of the handouts and conference presentation videos will be available on the ISTE Website later in July.

Once you have created a special learning environment for a student, you need to assign it.  This one-minute video shows you how to allocate a custom view to a specific child.

I am a parent of a 37-year old adult child who has Down Syndrome. Sarita was able to try out the SmartEdTech program. She loves all the activities; she likes learning social skills, using the camera and voice recorder, and so much more! SmartEdTech has increased her communication and learning opportunities.
